Thank Goodness I Was Bullied! DTH Episode 152 with Madonna Hanna

Many may be struck by this statement, some may even find it a bit offensive. That I can understand, because when I first read it, I was a bit struck too. Those who have been bullied may even find the statement a bit hurtful and that is by no means the intention. Regular listeners to the DTH podcast know that I speak often of the lessons of my life, and this is definitely one of those times. Both my guest, Madonna Hanna, and I speak on this topic with passion and vulnerability from a position of personal experience. It is my great honor to have met, and share with all of you, this conversation my new friend Madonna Hanna because of her statement, “Thank goodness I was bullied!”

Madonna was born on the Pensacola Naval Base and was raised in the conservative white suburbs of Boston, Massachusetts during the 60s and 70s. She was the only African-American student in her elementary school class. Her parents overcame incredible obstacles of discrimination to provide their family with the American dream of a suburban middle-class lifestyle.
Despite her creativity and talent, Madonna faced bullying, racial prejudice, and isolation at school due to the color of her skin. At that time, many white parents would not allow their children to play with her, which is why she only had a few friends.
The pain, loneliness, and injustice Madonna experienced could have destroyed her. But reflecting on it now, she recognizes that these adversities taught her how to meet future challenges with determination. It also informed her decision to always treat others with respect and compassion.

Episode 102: From Left to Libertarian, A Pro-Human Perspective in the Twin Cities… with Dan Garscia

As many of the regular listeners know, I love organizations that are all about bringing people together, promoting unity and community while also recognizing that we are all individuals with our own thoughts and ideas. This is why I truly adore and respect organizations like FAIR (Foundation Against Intolerance & Racism), Braver Angels and so many others that I have highlighted on the podcast. My friend Rick of Braver Angels recently introduced me Dan Garscia who is a spokesperson for the local Twin Cities chapter of FAIR.

The conversation in this episode was not originally meant to be one for broadcast, but just an introductory conversation between Dan and myself to find out more about FAIR Twin Cities. During the conversation, things were clicking with incredible synergy, so Dan and I decided this would be something of value to the DTH listeners. I have once again found a great collaborator for the Derate the Hate podcast in my new friend Dan Garscia of FAIR Twin Cities. Share this episode with your network, and more importantly, seek out and get involved with local chapters of great organizations like FAIR, Braver Angels and so many others doing great work to bring people together…

Episode 88: REAL Justice, REAL Solutions, EVERY Black Life Matters… with Kevin McGary

He saw Black Lives Matter (BLM) yucking it up with ANTIFA, having a grand ol’ time while black and brown businesses were burning, and Kevin McGary knew that something had to change. He figured people would see through the facade, but as things calmed down, and some of the noise subsided, people still didn’t get it…
After realizing himself that people were not accepting the reality that BLM was actually against everything that could actually help the black community, Kevin decided it was time for an alternative. The premise was simple, everything BLM was against, (based on their own site) EveryBLM would be for… Things like fathers, family, capitalism, school choice, pro-life, etc. Basically, REAL proven solutions that would actually help the black community. EveryBLM would be the alternative, promoting what is right and righteous.

Episode 87: Helping Others Obtain Destiny… with Pastor Corey Brooks of Project H.O.O.D.

Can you imagine spending a cold winter’s night on a rooftop, in the windy city of Chicago? How about spending 100 cold winter nights on a rooftop in one of Chicago’s most dangerous neighborhoods? What if the cause was so great that you felt called to do so? Well Pastor Corey Brooks felt that calling, and he is doing just that, for the second time!

Who is Pastor Corey Brooks and what is Project H.O.O.D.?
Pastor Corey B. Brooks, founder and Senior Pastor of New Beginnings Church of Chicago and founder and CEO of Project H.O.O.D. Communities Development Corporation has become a leading voice and presence in the fight against the violence gripping Chicagoโ€™s poorest neighborhoods.ย
Don’t miss this conversation where Pastor Brooks and I discuss his second go round on the rooftop in a cold Chicago winter, encouraging CEOs and others to join him on the roof to raise funds for an incredible community activity and learning center. We talk about his inspiring vision of providing hope, rehabilitation, revitalization and a path towards dignity and independence for those who have all but thrown in the towel.

Episode 77: School Choice is an Answer, But it’s Not The Only Answer… conversation with Tony Kinnett of The Chalkboard Review

I asked the question last week, “What do you think of the K-12 public education system as it exists today?” I think that most people who are paying attention, if being intellectually honest, would say that it’s a complete mess and it’s in many ways out of control. It is certainly out of control in terms of parents being in control of their children’s education. Many would say, and have said, that the K-12 public education system has become just another indoctrination mill for the loudest voices with a poisonous agenda. Just this week, we’ve seen the Department of Justice put out notice that those who oppose CRT and other poisonous curriculum should be monitored as domestic terrorists. Kind of scary isn’t it?

In my conversation this week,ย  Tony Kinnett of the Chalkboard Review and I discuss his piece that was recently published in the National Review titled “Conservatives, Take Back the Education Field”. We also discuss the reality that school choice, while certainly an important cause that is desperately needed, is not the only answer to solve the problems we face as a nation with our education system. It will take much more than school choice legislation to fix the mess we’re in. So many important points came out of this great conversation with Tony. Don’t miss this great conversation and be sure to share it far and wide…

Episode 76: An Eye on Education, Cameras in the Classroom? …with Dr. Elana Fishbein

What are your thoughts on the K-12 public education system as it exists today in our country? In recent weeks and months we’ve seen several instances where fed up parents and community members have stood up to school boards all over the country, due to any number or reasons, be it CRT, LGBTQ curriculum, mask mandates, etc…ย

Dr. Elana Fishbein of No Left Turn in Education is no stranger to the Derate The Hate podcast. We first spoke back in Episode 45 when No Left Turn was just a couple months in to their battle against the indoctrination that so many are becoming fed up with in our K-12 education system.ย  A lot has been happening with Dr. Fishbein and the No Left Turn organization since we last spoke, including some legal battles and working on proposed legislation to get cameras in to classrooms for full transparency of what our children are being taught.
