Those who have listened to the DTH podcast for awhile are probably familiar with my friend Mohamed Ahmed, a.k.a. Average Mohamed. I first had Mohamed on the podcast way back in episode 49 and that is when I first learned of his work battling extremism with an alternative narrative. Mohamed joined me again in episode 71 to discuss the 20 year anniversary of the attack on 9/11/2001. Mohamed Ahmed, my friend, works tirelessly in the battle against extremism of all kinds, and now he’s written a book to better tell his story and how it all began. The book is Average Mohamed: Freedom Fighter.

Ideas make the world go round. So, imagine a world in which we championed ideas of freedom and equality for all? For author Mohamed Ahmed, promoting peace and human rights has become a mission. In Average Mohamed Freedom Fighter, Ahmed chronicles his journey from immigrant to activist. Constructing a safe space for difficult conversations on identity, race, religion, and sexuality, Ahmed recounts his experiences while traveling the globe to speak to thousands of young people with the goal of countering biases with tolerance and inclusion. Challenging our assumptions, Ahmed’s inspiring life story will empower future generations of freedom fighters. From freedom comes peace.

Nothing Good Comes of Hate… DTH Episode 125

Nothing Good Comes of Hate

Iโ€™ve made the statement so many times on this podcast, but Iโ€™m reminded daily that nothing good comes of hate. There is no greater reminder in my mind than the speech given this past week, and other things said recently by the current President of the United States. For clarification, THE DTH PODCAST IS NOT POLITICAL. I want to make sure that is clear, but Hate is Hate and Iโ€™ll point it out when I see it.

People often make the statement, โ€œwords matterโ€. When labels are placed on large groups of people, and then those people are classified as a threat, bad things are bound to happen. Hate, no matter the context, is not healthy. The fact that our current President knows nothing about so many of what he calls โ€œright-wingersโ€ and โ€œultra-MAGA extremistsโ€, yet boldly spews his hatred for them, made me think of a conversation I recently had with my friend Daryl Davis.

Nazis at the Turning Point USA Event?

Did you hear about the Nazis at the Turning Point USA event? If those in the media, and more specifically, the gals on The View trying to perpetuate the Hate, you probably wouldn’t have. I thought it was another staged bit of nonsense. This is why I called up my friend Jeff Schoep.
We live in an age when certain people like to use their big platforms to perpetuate hate and false narratives to drive their own personal agendas. When I saw there were “Nazis” at the Turning Point USA student action summit in Tampa, Fl, I wanted to get the perspective of my friend Jeff Schoep. Jeff is the former head of the NSM ( National Socialist Movement) and the most high profile member of the neo-Nazi movement to leave the movement and devote his life to countering and preventing extremism. You may remember him from our conversation in Episode 70 of the Derate the Hate podcast.

Don’t miss this short but important conversation! Let me know what you think…

Episode 71: Islamic Extremism, 20 Years Later; Fighting for Minds… conversation with Average Mohamed

As we approach the 20th anniversary of one of the most tragic days in American history, I was reflecting on what happened that day, September 11, 2001. Who were the hateful killers that shook the world by striking a blow to the greatest power and greatest country on God’s green earth? I don’t mean who were the killers as individuals, and I certainly will not mention them by name, but why did a handful of hateful murderers kill 3000 of our fellow human beings, citizens of the United States and others from nearly 90 countries on September 11, 2001?

When it comes to speaking with authority about Islamic terrorists, I turn to my friend Average Mohamed, or the man behind Average Mohamed, AKA Mohamed Ahmed. For those not familiar with Average Mohamed, we first spoke back in Episode 49 about Battling Extremism, make sure to step back and listen to that great episode.

Episode 69: Misery, Politics & Extemism… coming soon… DTH Quickshot Episodes

I’ve recently had the idea to start doing some shorter, often random more spur of the moment types of episodes in addition to the regular weekly episode. There are many things that come to me each week that I’d like to share in hopes of engaging more with the listeners. Some of these may just be audio from a YouTube, Tik Tok or other platform, or some may just be quick recordings I do when something strikes me. They may just be me responding to emails or messages on social media. Either way, they’ll likely be random and of varying lengths and topics, so watch for them and share whenever possible.

This week’s episode was just based upon things I’ve seen, done or had on my mind over the course of this past week. Are you miserable with your life, job or maybe a relationship? Misery is a choice that only you can choose to change. I also spoke this past week to the national leadership team of Braver Angels about the We The Peoples’ Forum which I’m honored to be a part of. If you have not heard of that, be sure to check out Episode 66 and my conversation with David Lapp of Braver Angels and the Working Peoples’ Project.
