Episode 107: Don’t Be Mad That It’s Over, Be Grateful That It Happened

I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase, and it may sound cliche, “Don’t be mad that it’s over, be glad that it happened.” Now, quite often this is said in regards to a relationship that has ended,  but this is not one of those times…

This week I was devastated by some revelations having to do with my deer camp. Those who’ve listened to the podcast with any regularity for any amount of time know that my deer camp was very much my happy place and deer hunting is something I most look forward to each and every year. Check out this episode to find out more about what happened.

I also dive more into mindset, gratitude and some numbers associated with a study about the number of thoughts a person has on average each day, how many of them are negative and how much of that negative thinking is just recycled negativity from the day before. This is quite important because only we as individuals have the power to change this for ourselves…

This episode also includes some exciting updates on Braver Angels events that are taking place, including a project I’m currently involved in with the former director of the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Francis Collins… Links Below….

Episode 97: “Program Your Life, or Life Will Program You” ~ Les Brown

Like so many out there, I too find myself, at times, getting discouraged. I was having a conversation the other day, with a gentleman that most people would probably know of, and he asked me, “Wilk, is it too late?”, meaning, is it too late to bridge this divide, are we so full of hate and animosity for those of differing opinions that it cannot be turned around? I said to him, I wouldn’t be doing the Derate the Hate podcast if I felt it was too late. But like I said, I too find myself, at times becoming discouraged, and even at times feeling almost defeated. Sometimes when I think it may be time to give up, something happens…

My wife and I were having a discussion this week about all that we have going on, and she could tell I was a bit discouraged with certain things. She asked me if I had ever heard of Les Brown? I had not, so she sent me a YouTube Video of his. That 58 minute inspirational video was pure gold. Much of what Les talks about in the video was stuff that I have talked about on the DTH podcast, but his delivery and cadence are incredible.  This is a must watch or listen to video if you are unsure of the power of you and your mindset. It also brought to mind for me, Episode 52 of the DTH podcast, so for the first time, I am bringing back a large portion of that episode in this one.  Let me know your thoughts on both!

Episode 96: Overcoming Your Triggered Ego… with Haran Singham

“Don’t just go through life, GROW through life”. That is a phrase I had not heard before, but recently I found out about Haran Singham and his group, “The Happiness Mission”. That phrase means a lot to me, because I have much personal experience in that arena.

As I look back on my life, I see a lot that I am not proud of, but much that I AM proud of as well. We are not, nor should we be, defined by one period or instance in our life. You see, I know that I have GROWN in to a much different person than I used to be.

One very important part of GROWTH is not allowing our EGO to keep us where we are, but putting our ego in check to allow needed growth. Many of us have experienced TRAUMA that helped us to build a wall, a wall that is guarded by our EGO. Why is our EGO always getting triggered? I’ve asked Haran Singham to join me on this week’s DTH podcast to help answer that question.

Episode 92: What’s It Mean to be a Person Of Influence?

What is a person of influence? When most people think of people of influence, they often think of sports stars, celebrities, politicians, etc. What if I told you that you that you, no matter what you think of yourself, are most likely in some way a person of influence?

This week I talk a little about one of the most well known persons of influence this country has ever known, Martin Luther King Jr.. Dr. King changed the world through peace, love, understanding and common humanity. While MLK was a force for good, and an incredibly positive person of influence, not all people of influence are forces for good. The influence goes both ways, as is very evident in most peoples’ news feed on their social media feed of choice (or main stream media channel)…

Not all people of influence a force for good in your life, so choose wisely. Check out this incredibly important episode, share it with your network far and wide, and help me be a person of influence and a force for good in what at times seems like a sea of divisiveness and darkness.

Episode 83: Silver Linings, How they can be found

No situation in life has ever been made better by those who constantly beat the drum of negativity and/or victimhood. As someone who spent a large portion of my life with a bad attitude, I can definitively say that statement because I know it to be true. Gratitude is something I speak of often in this podcast, and in my personal and professional life, because I truly believe that you cannot be happy if you are not grateful, and the happy make the world a better place. As such, the unhappy and ungrateful make the world worse, it’s just the nature of things.

How a situation plays out, for better or for worse, often comes as a result of how we react to it. This is why I also often speak of personal accountability. Life tends to be messy, and there are negative things that happen within our lives every day, that if focused upon, can result in more negativity. Those who don’t constantly focus on the negative, are often those who produce more positive results because their minds generally work in a positive results driven mode rather than the negative. I talk about a simple, and personal example, of how this works and how one can find the silver lining in what seems to be a dark cloud.
