Episode 113: Be Engaged, Not Enraged… Discussing Braver Politics with Braver Angels Rick & Barbara

I started this podcast a couple years ago with the slogan, “Bettering the World, One Attitude at a Time”… That is more than just a mission statement for me, that has become one of my central purposes in life. Why you might ask? In many ways, it’s because I see our world, but more specifically our country, has in certain ways become broken.

What can we do if our country ‘s political system is broken?
In addition to doing the Derate the Hate podcast, I have become quite involved with the organization Braver Angels. Braver Angels has become one of the country’s leading organizations working to depolarizeย  and mend our social fabric. As I began to hear more about the latest initiative that Braver Angels was working on, Braver Politics,ย I wanted to know more. I thought who better to reach out to than my friends Rick and Barbara!

How can I engage without being enraged?
Would you like to become more involved in the political discussion, without becoming part of and enraged shouting match that accomplishes nothing? Take a listen to my conversation with my friends Rick Hotchner and Barbara Thomas, (who you may remember from Episode 48) where we are discussing Braver Politics… Let me know what you think!

Episode 93: Being Sincere Doesn’t Mean You’re Right, and Being Wrong Doesn’t Mean You’re Lying

In this current age of toxicity people often assume if someone states something they don’t agree with, the automatic reaction is “YOU’RE LYING”… Are they really lying, or are they wrong? Can someone be wrong, and be sincere, but not be lying? Just because someone is sincere about their beliefs, does not make them right, but also does not mean they are lying.

People without the benefit of having facts on their side often like to inhibit or censor the ability of those with dissenting information, and never in American history have we seen a time when there is more of a concerted effort by some to censor those of differing thoughts and opinions. This often times makes the skirmish between “you’re lying” and “you’re wrong” much more difficult, because peoples’ survival instinct kicks in when they are not “allowed” to voice their concerns and opinions. Is it any wonder we are so divided? Take a listen and let me know your thoughts…

Episode 80: It Must Be Nice… Envy is an Ugly Emotion

Areย  you someone who has worked hard and has some nice things? Are you proud to have those things? Have you ever been confronted by someone who says, “it must be nice” as if you somehow don’t deserve, or didn’t earn those things? Envy is an Ugly Emotion… an emotion that leads to resentment, anger and hate.

In this week’s solo episode I talk about a conversation I had recently had with someone that was confronted with this very scenario. It should come as no surprise, but still does, that there are those who would confront someone who has nice things and say, “it must be nice”, when there are those in politics and the media that drive and perpetuate class envy as they do. We must resist those who constantly attempt to divide us by class through the perpetuation of envy and disdain for those who have more than we do.ย

Episode 19: Political Theater, The Real Hate Speech

We are living through some of the most politically polarized times in the last 155 years, and I believe that is strongly in part due to the rhetoric spewed by our political class and the main stream media. I call this #PoliticalTheater, The #RealHateSpeech and I believe it’s done by design. Instead of trying to unite us on what we all have in common, and the greatness within our country, much of what is spread by the political mouthpieces and their cronies in the main stream media is meant to divide, confuse, and whip people into an emotional frenzy.
